Dear Runners,

Thanks to the 457 competitors completing the ten-mile and five-kilometer events, to the volunteers who made the races runner-friendly, to the Guilford Policemen and Parks and Recreation employees who kept the runners safe, and to the Gull of Fortune, who delivered a brilliant day with moderate temperatures and low humidity. The Sea Legs Shuffle put 243 runners, the largest field ever, over the course through Sachems Head. The new course route provided more of the spectacular water views for which Sachems Head is famous, along with a little extra terrain. A significantly increased field of 214 covered the five-kilometer loop through the center of historic Guilford.

As always, the times were quite good in the front of the pack, with four runners under one hour for ten miles, and seven runners under 18:37 (6:00 per mile pace) for five kilometers. Better yet, Julie and I know many people who beat their personal goals.

The ten-miler is perfectly positioned in the calendar for your fall marathon buildup, coming one month before the New Haven 20K Road Race, and eight to ten weeks before many target marathons. Many of the standard formulas for predicting marathon pace and time would suggest taking your per-mile pace for the Sea Legs Shuffle and adding thirty seconds per mile. You should be able to run the New Haven Road Race at the same pace as your training improves.

The beneficiaries of the Sea Legs Shuffle were the Guilford Parks and Recreation Department and the Guilford High School Cross County team. The course was beautiful, the race exciting, the timing perfect, and the causes worthy. And don’t forget the shirt!
